  • What's the role?

    • Work as part of a Global Network team to design, deploy and support 24x7x365 operations
    • Work internally and within the R&D and project teams to collect requirements for designing, building and deploying high availability, robust, resilient and supportable solutions - focusing on the infrastructure and operational elements of designing and deploying a service
    • Translate conceptual design to physical layout and device configurations
    • Work as part of a team of engineers responsible for defining and driving standards across the network services and platforms
    • Maintain a proper level of solution and operation design documentation and ensure it is updated during service/solution life cycle
    • Lead and support new releases, functionalities and configurations from development, verification and testing phases to production using defined processes such as change management
    • Work with internal teams to build a set of benchmarks ensuring availability and performance of internally used production services and solutions
    • Develop and utilize performance and capacity management KPI’s for proactive management of network services and solutions
    • Ensure deployment of best practices into design and configurations
    • Use backup and recovery best practices to ensure critical systems are protected from data loss in case of system failure
    • Provide assurance that new OS releases, versions or configurations are ‘fit for use’ (meets required specifications) and ‘fit for purpose’ (delivers required performance)
    • Translate the architecture design (including functional & non-functional requirements) into service requirements and takes responsibility for testing activities within own responsibility area
    • Collect, analyze, and make recommendations on technical issues of own area of responsibility
    • Consolidate service / solution data to formulate reports for reporting purposes
    • Provide training and act as a leader / mentor within ones own responsibility area.

    Who are you?



    • Degree in Network Engineering or equivalent practical experience
    • 10+ years’ experience in Network Engineering and/or operation position with a background designing and/or supporting high availability 24x7x365 environments
    • Strong analytical, strategic skills and troubleshooting skills
    • Capable of creating service documentation and keep it up-to-date through service/solution life cycles.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a group
    • Understanding of cultural differences; willing and able to work as part of a global team
    • Clear understanding of the lifecycle of network services
    • Excellent communicator. Shares ideas effectively through many means 
    • Experience in network technologies:  horizontally scaled systems, and high-throughput services
    • Multi-Data Centre, Enterprise & Service Continuity Management.
    • Familiar with Cisco, Juniper, A10, F5, Arbor, Avocent, Infoblox, Riverbed and other network products. 
    • Deep network understanding of WAN and LAN protocols and technologies. 
    • Juniper/JUNOS, Cisco IOS/IOS-XE/IOS-XR/, F5 and A10, CLI and GUI relevant for the role, which can include but is not limited to:
    • Network Switching: Spanning tree, VLAN, ARP, fabrics, 
    • Network Routing: MPLS, iGP (OSPF&EIGRP), eGP (BGP), 
    • Network Monitoring Tools: Science Logic, Nagios, Splunk and/or Zabbix
    • Network security implementations and options
    • Content Delivery Network implementations
    • WAN Acceleration
    • DNS/DHCP IPAM and GLB Solutions
    • Global Wireless technologies
    • Remote Access (SSL, IPSEC) and 2FA technologies
    • Experience working in large network environments including switching, routing, Firewall and load balancing.
    • Experience with centralized log analysis tools e.g. syslog-ng
    • Knowledge of scripting tools and/or programming languages for automation (e.g. Python, Ansible, etc)
    • Can handle high stress and pressure-filled situations in a calm and professional manner

    The Principal Network Engineer - Backbone is responsible for designing, deploying, securing, and providing escalation support of the HERE wide area network and infrastructure within Global Network Services (GNS). The position will report to the respective Senior Network Manager.
