  • What's the role?


    Support Services is looking for a Senior Ruby Developer to join our small team. The Developer will help with software development tasks related to our primary responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

    • Evaluating/Implementing (or Creating) tools to meet specific requirements;
    • Automating the configuration of instrumentation
    • Programmatically managing network device configurations, including compliance audit and configuration management;
    • Collecting and deriving operational data about the network to produce meaningful reports or metrics
    • Building back-end systems with REST or AMQP interfaces to provide services related to networking;
    • Working to establish a customer-friendly, easy-to-use self-request process for commonly requested tasks;
    • Working to automate customer-facing and internal processes to reduce error, increase delivery speed, and reallocate humans to more suitable tasks;
    • Working with other departments within IT to integrate with their automation and processes that are shared or complementary;
    • Mentoring junior team members regarding best practices, conventions, alternate approaches, performance tips, and the general fruits of their experience

    Who are you?

    • You are a seasoned developer with a Bachelor of Computer Science or an equivalent amount of work experience.
    • You work equally well on a team as by yourself and find sharing knowledge with your colleagues to be rewarding.
    • You have at least 5 years of experience with foundational programming languages, and at least one of those years was spent in the trenches with Ruby.
    • You have experience in the front end (HTML/CSS/ES/jQuery/Bootstrap/AJAX) or some of our backend flavors (Ruby/Rails/Padrino, Ruby templating languages, PostgreSQL/Sequel).
    • You recognize and use design patterns; you've been allowed to make mistakes and you've learned from them; you have acquired a good set of best practices over the years.
    • You interface with databases because someone has to; you can modify the schema to add that extra relation when needed.
    • You are more comfortable in text mode and have deployed apps to a Unix server that do some cool things.

     We are the Support Services team within HERE's Global Network Services department. Our mission is to provide tooling for GNS. We are a small team that delivers COTS and custom solutions that help our engineers do their jobs more effectively and give them more time to DO engineering. The catchphrase is "automation" and almost everything we're doing leads down that path.

    The team:

    • evaluates, tests, and selects potential commercial tools;
    • deploys selected tools and manages their operating platform;
    • designs and builds custom tools that facilitate or automate departmental tasks;
    • creates and manages workflows and orchestration for customer-facing and internal GNS processes;
    • builds back-end systems to enable automation against devices and systems according to business rules;
    • manages the operational environment for each tool deployed
