As a Principal Software Engineer, you will play a strategic role in both guiding technical direction and delivering critical features. You will contribute to the development of sophisticated technologies that aggregate and process terabytes of road data from millions of connected vehicles, Earth-orbiting satellites, and aerial imagery captured by aircraft.

 

Your work will directly influence the creation of high-precision digital HD maps used by leading automakers such as BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, and Daimler—supporting everything from in-car navigation and driver assistance systems to fully autonomous driving. Responsibilities:  

 As a Principal Software Engineer, you will define and lead the design, implementation, and evolution of core services within the UniMap platform. You will mentor and support engineering teams in building scalable, cloud-native applications. In this role, you will collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, architects, and business stakeholders to ensure that technical solutions align with strategic goals. You will take ownership of the quality, performance, and reliability of mission-critical services. Additionally, you will drive architectural discussions, evaluate emerging technologies, and advocate for engineering best practices. Your work will also involve ensuring seamless integration across multiple systems and domains, including geospatial data ingestion, transformation, and distribution.

Who are you?

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Computer Science/Information Systems or equivalent
  • 10+ years of professional software development experience, with proven ownership of large-scale systems
  • Team leadership skills and experience are nice to have.
  • Excellent applied skills in Java programming, in combination with backend architecture, messaging technologies and related frameworks
  • Strong cloud experience, preferably with AWS (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda), but also familiar with Azure, IBM, or Oracle Cloud)
  • Strong and applied experience in REST based web service technologies, JSON and XML, SOA and micro services architectures
  • Proficiency in at least one modern data streaming or messaging platform such as Kafka, Flink, Pulsar, Kinesis, or Beam
  • Strong and applied DBMS & SQL skills, with a strong preference on PostgreSQL
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Strong experience CI/CD tools, with a preference on GitLab
  • Good knowledge of using issue tracking tools (e.g., JIRA), code collaboration tools (e.g., Git/GitLab/GitHub) and team collaboration tools (e.g., Confluence).
  • Good knowledge of Linux/Unix – familiar with shell scripting
  • Able to translate business and architectural features into quality, consistent software design   
  • Solid knowledge of programming practices, strive to write great code that is reusable, flexible, and reliable.
  • Strong quality mindset is considered a must: unit testing, performance testing, writing testable code
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, details-oriented and a strong team player with an agile mindset
