What's the role?

We are hiring a GIS Engineering Manager II to build and lead a high‑performing team responsible for delivering and operating our ArcGIS Enterprise platform, running on a slightly customized AWS EKS (Kubernetes) environment.

This is a people‑first leadership role with significant technical accountability. You will hire, coach, and develop GIS DevOps engineers while also setting technical direction across reliability, scalability, security, performance, and cost. You will partner closely with Cloud Platform, Security, Data/Analytics, and application teams to ensure the GIS platform is operated with strong engineering discipline and modern DevOps practices.

Key Responsibilities

People & Team Leadership (Primary)

  • Build, manage, and grow a GIS DevOps engineering team in Poland, including hiring, onboarding, and defining the team operating model.
  • Lead day‑to‑day people management: 1:1s, coaching, performance feedback, goal setting, career development, and promotion readiness.
  • Establish a team culture focused on ownership, reliability, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide clarity on priorities, execution plans, and expectations; ensure the team can deliver reliably with sustainable on‑call practices.
  • Mentor senior engineers and develop future technical leaders; support skills growth across GIS, cloud, Kubernetes, and DevOps.

Platform Strategy, Ownership & Governance

  • Own the technical direction and roadmap for the ArcGIS Enterprise platform on AWS EKS.
  • Define and drive improvements to platform maturity, including SLOs/SLAs, incident management, change management, and release governance.
  • Establish quality gates and operational standards for reliability, security, observability, and cost efficiency.
  • Partner with Cloud Platform and Infrastructure teams to influence Kubernetes and cloud architecture decisions affecting GIS workloads.

ArcGIS Enterprise Platform Leadership (Technical Accountability)

  • Provide technical oversight for the design, installation, configuration, upgrades, and lifecycle management of ArcGIS Enterprise components (Portal, ArcGIS Server, Data Store, Web Adaptors).
  • Ensure the platform meets enterprise expectations for availability, scalability, security, performance, and disaster recovery.
  • Set standards for authentication, authorization, certificate management, and licensing.
  • Act as the escalation point for high‑severity and systemic issues; coach engineers through root‑cause analysis and durable fixes.

DevOps, Kubernetes & Automation Enablement

  • Ensure Infrastructure as Code and automation standards are in place for repeatable, auditable environments and upgrades (e.g., Terraform, Helm).
  • Drive adoption of CI/CD practices for platform changes, upgrades, configuration management, and controlled rollouts.
  • Shape the platform’s operational tooling: monitoring, logging, alerting, dashboards, runbooks, and incident response.
  • Reduce operational toil through automation and process improvement; ensure reliability improves over time.

Advanced GIS Platform Engineering (Capabilities You Will Institutionalize)

While you may not perform all tasks personally, you are expected to ensure the team is capable and accountable for:

  • ArcGIS Enterprise log analysis and service performance tuning, including instance configuration, pooling, and timeout tuning.
  • GIS‑specific observability, including metrics for latency, queue depth, saturation, and throughput (e.g., ArcGIS Monitor).
  • Storage and data architecture across AWS services (EBS, EFS, S3, FSx, RDS) and appropriate patterns for raster data, FGDB, and EGDB.
  • I/O and throughput optimization for large‑scale geospatial workloads.
  • Load testing and capacity planning, including concurrency modeling and scaling strategies.
  • Disaster recovery design and validation, including Portal, Data Store, and cross‑region recovery.
  • Identity integration using SAML/OIDC with appropriate role and group mapping.
  • Cost optimization, including autoscaling, storage tiering, and infrastructure efficiency.
  • GIS‑aware CI/CD (“GISOps”), including service deployment, schema evolution, and data migrations with safe rollout and rollback mechanisms.

Who are you?

  • Proven people‑management experience is required, including hiring, onboarding, performance feedback, coaching, and career development of engineers.
  • Strong technical background operating production‑grade platforms with high availability and reliability requirements.
  • Hands‑on understanding of ArcGIS Enterprise operations in enterprise environments.
  • Strong experience with AWS and familiarity with Kubernetes/EKS operational concepts.
  • Experience implementing and enforcing Infrastructure as Code and automation practices.
  • Solid understanding of Linux, networking, and cloud security fundamentals.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead across organizational boundaries.

Nice to Have

  • Experience leading platform or reliability teams in enterprise environments
  • Proven track record scaling GIS or data platforms across regions or business units
  • Experience defining platform standards, SLOs, and maturity models
  • Prior people‑management experience or mentorship of senior engineers
  • Familiarity with governance, security, and compliance concerns for enterprise GIS
  •
